R. A. Bird for G Plan Teak, Glass & Cane Coffee Table, 1970s

A beautifully considered circular coffee table designed by R. A. Bird for G Plan, dating from 1978.

The table has a solid, sculpted teak frame surrounding an inset circular glass top, with a woven cane shelf suspended below. It is the cane that really makes the piece. As well as providing useful storage for books and magazines, it brings a lighter, more natural quality to the design and contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the teak.

R. A. Bird worked with G Plan during the later 1970s, producing a number of occasional tables that moved away from the heavier teak furniture associated with the company earlier in the decade. His designs often combined timber with glass and cane, giving them a distinctly Scandinavian influence.

The detailing here is particularly good. The broad rounded rim flows neatly into the four legs, while the circular cane shelf echoes the glass above. Viewed from the side, there is a lovely sense of space between the two surfaces.

A less commonly seen G Plan design and a particularly good example of the more adventurous furniture the company was producing towards the end of the 1970s.
