Peter Nelson for Architectural Lighting Ltd. Rare Series A Prototype Floor Lamp for Habitat, c.1970
Description
An exceptionally rare prototype floor lamp designed by Peter Nelson for Architectural Lighting Ltd. as part of the renowned Series A range, developed for Habitat around 1970.
This remarkable lamp was identified directly by Simon Fussell, who worked alongside Peter Nelson from 1967 and collaborated with Terence Conran during the development of lighting for Habitat. Simon confirmed that this model was a prototype, with approximately twenty examples produced.
Whilst the standard Series A floor lamps are well documented, this mushroom-form version does not appear in surviving catalogues, making it an exceptionally scarce and previously undocumented variant.
Constructed in anodised aluminium with twin uprights, a weighted circular base, integrated pull-cord switch and a large opal acrylic mushroom diffuser, the lamp perfectly reflects Peter Nelson's architectural approach to lighting design—functional, minimalist and beautifully engineered.
The dimensions correspond closely with documented Series A floor lamps, sharing the characteristic 27cm weighted base and overall height of approximately 135cm.
A significant piece of British modernist lighting, combining the design legacy of Peter Nelson, the manufacturing quality of Architectural Lighting and the pioneering retail vision of Terence Conran's Habitat.
