Kai Kristiansen Attributed Danish Teak Elevator Coffee Table, 1950s

Description

A beautifully crafted Danish teak elevator coffee table, attributed to renowned Danish designer Kai Kristiansen and dating from the mid-1950s. The table was purchased new in 1956, giving this wonderful piece a particularly strong provenance.

Designed with both form and function in mind, the teak top effortlessly raises from coffee-table height to create a practical dining or working surface. Below sits an elegant full-width slatted magazine shelf, while the finely tapered legs and beautifully figured teak give the table its unmistakable Scandinavian Modern aesthetic. The underside retains its original PBS Made in Denmark stamp.

While we have been unable to conclusively document the designer, the table has been attributed to Kai Kristiansen and displays the refined proportions, quality craftsmanship and intelligent functionality associated with his work.

A superb and highly practical example of early Danish Modern design, with a wonderful warm patina and over 70 years of history.
