Gordon Russell Double Helix Sideboard – David Booth & Judith Ledeboer

£1695.00

Description

A superb and highly distinctive Double Helix sideboard by Gordon Russell, designed by David Booth and Judith Ledeboer in 1951.

One of the more recognisable pieces of post-war British furniture design, the sideboard takes its name from the wonderful repeating helix pattern running across the two doors. The decoration is created by routing through the dark rosewood veneer to reveal the contrasting pale timber beneath – a beautifully simple detail that gives the cabinet its unmistakable appearance.

The design dates from the period of the 1951 Festival of Britain, when Gordon Russell was at the forefront of progressive British furniture design. Examples of the Double Helix are now held in important design collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Constructed using a combination of mahogany, sapele and richly figured rosewood, the cabinet is finished with its original brass ring handles and stands on elegant tapered legs. Internally, the generous cupboard provides excellent storage while its relatively compact proportions make it particularly usable in a modern interior.

The original Russell of Broadway manufacturer's label remains present. A genuinely special piece of early 1950s British design – decorative, beautifully made and increasingly difficult to find.
