Chippy Heath Contour 1960s Sculptural Telephone Chair

Description

An exceptional example of British mid-century design, the Chippy Heath Contour is a wonderfully inventive piece of furniture that combines seating, storage and a telephone table in one beautifully considered design.

Its defining feature is the sweeping, asymmetrical upholstered back, which curves around the seat to create an almost cocoon-like silhouette. Set against the warmth of the timber frame, the vibrant turquoise upholstery gives this example a particularly striking presence.

The integrated table sits neatly alongside the seat, with its own pull-out drawer, while an additional curved drawer provides useful storage beneath. The beautifully shaped timber supports, with their distinctive cut-out detailing, complete a design that is as interesting from the side and rear as it is from the front.

Manufactured by British furniture maker Chippy Heath during the 1960s, the Contour is one of the more distinctive interpretations of the traditional telephone seat. At a time when the telephone was becoming an increasingly important part of everyday domestic life, Chippy Heath found a way to turn a practical household necessity into something far more considered.

Today, it is the sculptural form and unusual combination of functions that make the design so appealing. Equally at home in a contemporary interior or a more eclectic collection of 20th century furniture, it is a piece that needs very little else around it.

A particularly characterful example of British mid-century design, with a presence that goes well beyond its original purpose.
